Puppy and Adult care
Puppy Care
We feed all our puppies Iams large breed puppy food. We also feed canned Pedigree Puppy once a day in the morning. To keep the stomach flora active, we suggest you put one (1) tablespoon of yogurt (that has active yeast cultures) on a small amount (1 cup) of canned food. Feed only what the pup will consume in 1 minute. Your puppy will grow very quickly and this can be destructive to their bones if growth is too rapid. Please feed a high quality food such as Eukanuba. The protein level and calorie intake are just right for your growing Saint. It has been proven that DHA strengthens the retina of the eye AND helps with stress. One should keep their pet on DHA for life. You will want a 300 mg - 500mg fish based DHA. Simply squeeze the contents from the DHA liquid capsule on pets food once a day. I recommend if you chose a food without glucosamine, you will want to purchase a supplement. Please inquire with your vet for recommendations and dosing. There are numerous, quality brands on the market today. |
To ease in the house training process, we suggest you remove all food at 5pm and water at 8pm. Please do not let your pup get overweight. Your pup will be healthier and live longer if you use an excellent quality feed. We recommend you spay or neuter your pet. Your pet can be spayed or neutered around 5 to 6 months of age.
We recommend that you take your puppy straight home. Your pup will need time to adjust to its new surroundings and parents. It will also need time to build resistance to the bacteria in your area. Kids and puppies go together … But watch those paws and very sharp puppy teeth. Teach your puppy not to jump and scratch.
House training will be as successful as you are diligent! Crate training done properly is very successful. Do not let your pup have the run of the house. If you keep the pup contained to a small room or the kitchen, training will be easier. Your large breed pup already knows how to use a doggy door!
We strongly suggest you obedience train your pup. Classes held at Pet Stores are a lot of fun and educational. You can also find information about training in books and on the internet. A well trained pet is a joy to society.
Keep your pup vaccinations and worming up to date. If your pup is under 9 weeks, it will need Da2P+PV at 10 and 12 weeks of age. Rabies can be given as early as 12 weeks. If you purchased an older pup, it has already received all its vaccinations. Don’t forget to get yearly booster shots. Heart worm medication and flea and tick preventatives are also recommended.
We micro chip all our puppies. To protect your privacy, we have chosen to use the AKC companion recovery service. We will insert the chip between the shoulder blades of the puppy. You will register the chip in your name with AKC. Once you register your pup with AKC, they will send you a tag for your dogs collar. They will provide 24/7 lifetime recovery service. There are no yearly membership dues. AKC Reunite has helped many lost dogs find their way home.
